Ascent of Roaring Plains on 2018-02-18
|Date:||Sunday, February 18, 2018|
|Ascent Type:||Unsuccessful - Turned Back|
| Location:||USA-West Virginia|
| Elevation:||4125 ft / 1257 m|
Ascent Trip ReportExplored up the flatrock trail from laneville (parking .2 past the trailhead over the bridge). Took the easement up until the national forest. Followed it fairly well through the switchbacks and across the stream (tricky in the icy wet conditions). Even made the turn off the 'logging' road portion of the trail the first time. But missed another turn off when it rejoined further up (cairn was there in the middle of the path, but mostly covered by snow). The grade that continued up was overgrown and disappeared in spots, so that should have been our sign we had gone wrong. But we came upon a nice waterfall and even climb uphill there an additional 100 or 150 feet. Found where we missed the turn on the way back. Snow covered most other way up, but becoming more muddy on the way back. Overall, an enjoyable afternoon out in West Virginia.
