Ascent Trip ReportAfter the painfully slow scramble up to Square Top from Sheep Canyon I was looking for a quicker route than climbing down the wash (or up the wash, depending on your route) into Sheep Canyon. Almost every .gpx track left and returned to Sheep Canyon Campground. I decided on a different route. We parked at Salvador Canyon and hiked up the canyon and took the ridge that takes you all the way up to Collins Benchmark. It was steep but we made it to the top in around 2.5-3 hours, we left around 5:30am. From there we slid down the scree in the wash Southwest of the peak, made our way over the boulders to Knob BM. (Knob BM needs a note pad, it is missing) From there we bee-lined to the ridge North of Peak 3380 (Prov) and climed down to the flat area Northeast of the peak. We traveled North up the wash to the ridge and then turned Southeast to the flat area just Northwest of Palms BM. From there it was a short scramble up Palms BM keeping an eye out for the easiest route. (Palms BM needs a note pad) From Palms BM we headed North following the ridge as best we could, ending up on the West side of the ridge and made our way to the base of Elder BM. We climed the wash to the East up to the peak. From Elder Peak we headed North dropping down to a nice flat bowl. I was really surprised to find so much garbage in this area. I filled my pack with rifle shells, glass beer bottles, batteries, and some rubber shooting targets that were left up there. I couldn't fit all of it in my bag so there are shells and broken glass all over the place. I don't know how or why someone would climb all this way with guns and glass beer bottles just to target practice. After the clean up we headed North and took the ridge down as far as we could, it was really steep here. We then headed Northeast and descended back into Salvador Canyon and hiked to the truck arriving at 4:30pm. We carried 3.5 liters of water each. (Total miles 10.3; elevation gain 5,948ft) |
