Ascent Trip ReportWe first went to the Alpine, TX. welcome center, found out about Hancock hill with its network of trails behind the University, in particular "The Desk". We decided to go looking for "The Desk". We also learned about "A Mountain", with its multi-tower capped ridge, southwest of Hancock - we looked/couldn't find a safe open access.
I should note that it was difficult for me to find "The Desk", I had to make 2 trips, a number of people I talked-to on the trail had the same problem - they never found it.
For my second visit I went to the Library for information, saw the desk and note books, the map they provide is not much of a map but I got there.
Directions to the TH. -- From Harrison Street on the west side of the University take the 4th entrance and drive east to its end, turn left and go to the top end of the large parking lot behind the Mountainside Dorms. This is the TH.
A trail heads/climbs north .4 miles around a pile of rocks to the MIDDLE summit capped with a short antenna. At the rocks there is a Trail Fork, left is for Middle, right is a short-cut to "The Desk".
From the Middle its a short 400 yds walk (drops to a sag) westbound to the WEST summit - at the south end of the small N-S ridge line, at the north end is a small cross.
For "The Desk" and the "Northeast" summit, walk east from MIDDLE abt 250 yds to a another pile of rocks where trail bends left (north) and comes to a TRAIL JCT (30.37118,-103.64639) at 200 yds - another antenna is just to the right.
Trail north took me another 300 yds to NORTHEAST summit.
Trail right (east) led me 200 yds to "THE DESK" among a pile of rocks, 3 old bicycles hang from a near-by tree. I signed the register.
Once back to the TRAIL JCT I followed trails southbound .5 miles to SOUTHEAST summit - capped with a blue/plastic 45Gal drum and a rectangular plywood frame with no top (looks like a desk from the bottom).
I returned to my TH going .4 miles westbound on trails.
"I NEVER THOUGHT I NEEDED HELP BEFORE
THOUGHT THAT I COULD GET BY - BY MYSELF
BUT NOW I KNOW THAT I JUST CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE,
AND WITH HUMBLE HEART, ON BENDED KNEES
I'M BEGGIN' YOU PLEASE FOR HELP." ......... johnny cash lyrics to "help me".
