Ascent Trip ReportThis was my second attempt to get Clamshell. In 2014,i hiked right past it. My friend and I were too busy talking, so I wasn't paying attention. This time, I paid attention! The road to the closed gate at 10.7 miles is in good shape. We parked next to the road at the closed gate. After passing the turnoff to Monrovia and Rankin, we ran into a group of workers who were planting native plants and removing some invasive plants. Evidently, after Edison installs its towers, some restorative plant work is needed. The new plants are marked with red/pink tape. They are contracted to plant and maintain the plants (water them) for two years. They weren't working too hard, but there are a lot of new plants lining the road. Interesting stuff for me. The road hike gets a little boring, but 2N31 is a really pretty and shady trail. We passed the firebreak to Rankin, then in about a mile, climbed the steep, and loose in sections, firebreak to Clamshell. After Clamshell, we climbed a couple more firebreaks, then it was back to the road for the walk back to the car. Not a hard hike; just a long slog, albeit a shady one for the most part. The gnats were out in full force, which caused me to break out the bug net and wear it for almost the entire hike. They are really annoying! I forgot about the register; read that it is hidden away somewhere,so it didn't jump out at me on the peak. Great views of everything below. This peak finishes the LPC list for me!
