Ascent Trip ReportI honestly didn't know there was a campground at the start of this approach. But there is! Cottonwood campground. Would be easy to camp here overnight and do a quick early morning bag. Wish I'd thought of it. Because of all the windfarms going up in the area, the roads are now incredibly good. Still dirt, but perfectly graded. Doable in your Prius. The trail head starts in the campground. When you get to the large Cottonwood campground sign, turn left, and you'll shortly see a very worn sign marking the trail head for Sombrero Peak. The trail itself is not maintained, and probably not able to be followed without navigation help.
We followed some pedestrian trail, some OHV trail, and sprinkled in a necessary bit of cross-country. The only real tricky bit is the final (but relatively short) boulder scramble to the peak. I typically fall squarely and strongly in the anti-cairn camp, but in this case some cairns marking the way to thread the needle among the steep boulders to the peak were invaluable.
We attempted Bow Willow on the way back. We hadn't known there is a worn trail until we were almost at the peak and saw the trail coming from the other direction. We took the trail on the way down.
10 Miles round trip.
