Ascent Trip Report

Trip to ATL office and realized there is a National Park area with some topographic relief nearby and so just enough time to explore. Turns out there are several small hills/peaks in the Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area (CRNRA) that have some distinct prominence so I had time to check them out before dark. I was disappointing to see there are not really more than a 100 feet of prominence with any of them but there are some nice deciduous woods and a grand view of the large river here. I liked this little impromptu hike as a winter excursion. I would have ranked it a 2 or 3 out of 10 if it were not for the winter conditions. The deciduous woods were wide open and easy to bushwhack, the hill is very steep along the river side which makes it a fun romp uphill, and the river itself is wide with some strong current so it was a surprisingly a nicer impromptu journey than expected. I took the bike path from the parking lot off of Cobb Parkway and paid the $5 to use the area. It is half a mile of flat bike lane then I took the blue blaze trail along the river until I was satisfied that the trail up the peak shown on the USGS map was no longer an option. Thus, I bushwahcked up the steep south side and easily found the "summit" This feature is small but has a very distinct ridge that drops in all directions giving it a fun feel and a view of the river through the trees with no leaves. Can see large buildings nearby. I suspect in summer there are no views. I then bushwhacked down hill and around and picked up the blue blaze trail to the connection saddle and then went up the next taller peak in the park.
