Ascent Trip ReportI have yet to record any of my South Mountain hikes on this site because they are all too easy and small to bother. Upon finishing this hike I felt as though it was worth recording. Last "peak" on SOMO for me to tag, been years of looking at it while on short Goat Hill romps.
Started from Desert Foothills Parkway TH, hiked West on National until turnoff descent towards San Juan Road (signed, few minutes before Goat Hill turnoff). Maybe a mile or so of road hiking takes one to turnoff for easily spotted switchbacks ascending to ridge that Maricopa is connected to. We took the official trail the whole way to the top and returned by a much shorter and nicer descent that goes straight from the top to the ridge in the most efficient way possible (you will see this alternate trail from official trail on hike towards peak). From the ridge we returned the way we approached.
7 hours (including breaks) for 14.7 miles and 3,642 feet of elevation gain. Would do this again but only on a very nice day, we had a high of 60 degrees.
