Ascent Trip ReportAfter staying Lamar the largest town between Mount Sunflower KS we could find on our way to OK, we awoke to the smell of massive cow dung fields and headed south. There was not much in the way of food in Lamar so we headed out and on the way the twin buttes jumped out at me. I quickly read it was a commonly hiked county HP...likely on private land but with no "trespassing" sign issues. We parked by the closed gate and Willie immediately ran under the barb wire fence and snagged his hide and bled a bit. Yikes. But he was excited to go with me. Karen followed. It was very windy and we got to the summit of the taller southern volcanic cone it was 35 mph winds with gust pushing 45 mph. The rock looked like rhyolite to me. There was a minor scramble at the very top but the rest was a typical off trail easy class 2. At the summit I saw the second cone top and it is a minor down climb to the saddle and back up the northern butte if you want the extra credit. Willie accompanied me to the first butte but ran back to see his mom coming up. I re-climbed the southern cone to join Karen at the summit and take in very good views. Lots of wind turbines in the area. Willie had a delightful outing. Then we headed back to the car to drive to the OK state HP. We took the most direct route which was somewhat adventurous. |
