Ascent Trip Report

Have hiked this Gaston County HP many times over the years. Best route there is to set your Google Maps App to the Crowder's Mountain State Park Visitor's Center located west of Gastonia near the the SC Border. The trail is well marked and ascends gracefully from the Fern or Turnback trailheads, as well as from the Visitor's Center. To make it a 5 mile loop, park at the picnic area at the Fern Trailhead and ascend gently from that point. The trail has moderate switchbacks from the intersection with the Turnback and Pinnacle trails. The last 1/2 mile is a gasser though. The pitch because increasingly steep and ends with a rock scramble to the top/ridge. Views of the North and West are amazing. On a good day you can see the Brushy and South Mountains to the North and NE, as well as the Blue Ridge and Grandfather Mountain. Just across the ridge are views to the South of Henry's Knob and the valley below. The HP is just East of the end of the trail with a very worn BM encased in rock just below the iron pipe, which is the actual HP. Careful on the way down as the trail is not well maintained at the higher elevations. Try to avoid this hike on summer weekends and holidays as you may find yourself in line to trod to the top behind school classes or scouts.
