Ascent of Hanakauhi on 2018-01-16Date: | Tuesday, January 16, 2018 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Hanakauhi | Location: | USA-Hawaii | Elevation: | 8907 ft / 2714 m |
Ascent Trip ReportDay 1 - I started from the Halemau'u Trailhead and hiked the little over 4 miles and -1000ft of elevation down to the Holua backcountry campsite (free, but must register at the visitor center). That took me around 2.5 hours. I set up camp and admired the sunset.
Day 2 - I took the Halemau'u trail. I took the left fork north of Halali'i. Just past Kawilinau (65ft deep hole) I took a left on the "Unmaintained Trail". If I were to do it again, I'd probably stay on the Halemau'u trail a little longer. There appears (sat imagery) to be another trail that will get you to the ridge without bushwhacking. Anyway, I took the unmaintained trail to the bushes. At the bushes I headed east and bushwhacked to the south west ridge trying my best not to leave any tracks. I tried my best to avoid the sand and take the rocks where ever possible. There were a couple false summits that got me, but the views from the top were spectacular. I returned to camp roughly the same way, but took the Silversword Loop. Round trip from camp was around 9.3 miles and took 4h 15m.
Day3 - I got up at 3am, packed up and hiked out (2h 20m) to catch the sunrise. I didn't have the sunrise permit, but was betting they only checked at the gate. That turned out to be the case. I took my jetboil, water, tea, and a camera and hiked to the small highpoint Pakaoao to watch the sunrise. |
