Ascent of Quartz Mountain on 2018-01-03
|Date:||Wednesday, January 3, 2018|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||4650 ft / 1417 m|
Ascent Trip ReportSolo hike up to Quartz and Bessequartz. Took the South ridge. Surprisingly pleasant forest hike up to about 3600-3800 ft. No snow at all until about 3000. Little snow up until the traverse (3600-3800). The traverse was slick and time consuming. Lots of slick, snow covered rocks and wood. Lots of snow at the tarn at 4000 ft. Snowshoes were necessary here. The ridge to Quartz went well. I went to the true summit (a bit west of point 4641), not point 4641. Views were good in the directions not blocked by the trees.
The ridge to Bessequartz also went well. Good views of Bessemer from near the summit. Good views North from the summit. Weather was great.
The way back was more eventful than the way up. There are no good landmarks to follow going down. Got off track into bushy, steeper terrain. Ran out of daylight. Eventually got down and found the CCC road and followed it back to the spur road on which i came in on.
Saw nobody all day. Not too surprising on a week day in the winter.
