Ascent Trip Report

This was a private hike with George Christiansen and Pat Arredondo. It was 5 peakbagger bumps in JTNP. The first was 5196. We took the Lost Horse road to its end and parked. We followed the trail to Lost Horse about ½ mile until we were due south of the peak. We then crossed country to the summit where we found a register. We returned the same way.
Next was 4822. We took Park Road to the Geology Tour Road, turned left (north) went to a point where the road took a sharp turn to the left. We parked here and followed the Pine City trail. We followed this trail north about 3/4mile then crossed country due east to the summit. There was no register. On the way in we passed an old campsite that had several old bedsprings and lots of empty food cans. Looks like at one time there was a wooden shack and it burned down. We returned the same way.
Next was 4330. We continued on Park Road to a pull out at BM 2884 and parked. We crossed the road and followed a trail to a point just south of John’s Camp. We then turned NE and headed for the peak. We went straight up the face to the summit. This was probably not the best route. On the way down, we went down a ridge that was slightly to the west of our inbound trail, crossed a wash and ended up at John’s Camp. If I did this peak again, I would go up this way. At John’s Camp we found an old piece of equipment that looked like a stove.
Last was 5238 and Joshua BM. There were no parking spots at the parking spot for Ryan, so we parked on the road to Sheeps Campground. We then followed the trail to the trail to Ryan and followed the Ryan trail to a point at about 5100 feet. George left us to go on to do Ryan (Pat and I didn’t need Ryan). We turn left (north) and followed a use trail the short distance to 5238 where we waited for George. From 5238, we headed east down and over to Joshua BM. On the summit we found a register and a pole. From Joshua, we hiked down (north) to a gully and followed the gully down to flat wash and followed the wash east then north to Sheeps Campground and out to our vehicle.
One thing we discovered was that the week between Christmas and New Years was not the best time to be in JTNP. The weather was perfect, but the crowds were unbelievable. Finding a parking spot at all the trail heads was a real challenge.
