Ascent Trip ReportThis was a weird one. Never before has it taken me longer to come down a peak than go up it; but I guess there's a first time for everything.
There was ice (but no snow) from the parking area all the way to the summit, growing more consistent as we climbed. The trail appeared as though it is well kept during the summer, but (being winter) we encountered many blow-downs and one section where a tree on the outside edge of the path had slid away, taking the trail with it.
The hike was pretty slippery on the way up, a few times I found myself walking up the trail without moving at all. The real difficulty was on the way down though, as there were a few sections that were simply too steep to stop if we began sliding. Thankfully I generally over-prepare, and I had a 60' length of accessory rope that we put to use three or four times on the steepest parts of the descent. Even with that, it was a little hairy at times.
-Rated class three due to icy conditions and required use of hands for balance and traction. Under typical non-icy conditions this would be an entirely class 1 trek.
-Excellent directions to the trailhead and trail (both unmarked) from the book "Curious Gorge" (S. Cook).
