Ascent Trip Report

Well, I work on Whidbey Island just a few miles from here, so after 4 months of putting this bump off, we went for it... Following the trip report from legendary Southern California peakbagger George Christiansen, we made our way to High Point Dr after picking up coffee from Starbucks (Becca’s vow-induced whip whap) because I love her so much. At the literal fork in the road we kept right. For future peakbaggers when we say fork in the road you’ll know exactly what we mean... we made our way up to the high ground which seems to be just west of the road. The first place we explored was a large open field. I was so excited to find the possible High Point that I ran to the middle of the field. However, it seemed there was high ground next to a tree just to the north. Saywer noticed a wooden fence that could be climbed over. Then Sage noticed an excellent hole in the fence right next to the wood that could be easily crawled through, especially for a 9 year-old. We all followed him through the hole in the fence and stomped around the tree. We then explored the woods on the east side of the road and found the highest bump of ground over there, a moss-covered bump in the trees. The last thing we need is to find out we did not touch the High Point... right after we touched the high ground over there it began to rain, messing up Becca’s pretty hair. I reached into my pocket for the car keys, and could not find them. So, I assumed that Becca or one of the boys have the car keys. Well, none of them had them either. So, we retraced our steps to the tree and the field looking for the keys. Sawyer covered the ground east of the road while Sage was excited to run through the open field again. I crawled back through the fence ripping my favorite Arc’Teryx hoodie sweatshirt that Becca got for me because she is awesome. Sage was the savior of the day as he found the keys in the middle of the field, which likely fell out of my now-ripped hoodie’s kangaroo pouch when I was running across the field looking for the high ground. We then made our way back to the car with the appropriate keys to open the doors. Overall, a fun morning on beautiful Whidbey Island with this peaceful but lackluster drive up. I thought this peak would be more impressive as Dave Covill and Laura Newman have come all the way from Colorado and SoCal just to bag it. Well, maybe Rob Woodall will make it here from the UK someday... Pics
