Ascent of Snowstorm Peak on 2017-12-10Date: | Sunday, December 10, 2017 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Snowstorm Peak | Location: | USA-Colorado | Elevation: | 12511 ft / 3813 m |
Ascent Trip ReportI had to park about 2 miles from the CT/Kennebec parking lot, but it was a straight-forward walk up the road to the saddle. Any river or stream crossing was frozen, but plenty of snow and dirt thrown on the slick ice made it passable. From the saddle I went up the western ridge of Cumberland. No snow, faded trail but grade was shallow enough that a direct ascent is possible. From the summit, I went down the southeast ridge toward the saddle between Cumberland and Snowstorm. Again, not very steep and a direct route is possible. For Snowstorm, I followed the north ridge direction but stayed mostly on the east side to avoid the wind coming out of the west. Descent off the summit was fine, back the way I came and eventually met up with the road. Both summits were a great intro to Mayday and La Plata Canyon. Scouting for future winter ascents and ski lines. Fun canyon to explore and close to Durango. |
