Ascent Trip Report

gmaps will take you to this trailhead, although it will refer to the road as either rancheria or 23S16. the road is actually signed FH-90 and 24S15, and the USFS map calls it 24S15. regardless of the name: this dirt road is passable by essentially any passenger car from CA-155 on the south, and through to the paved 23S16 to the north (at portugese pass).

just the hike i needed after three days of desert peaks. nice forested trail. i enjoy walking through burned areas.

as i reached the summit there were two other hikers just about to depart, robert and catherine. catherine was working on her last few HPS peaks. we chatted for a bit about the peaks in the area, and commiserated about the brush on the way to split mountain (which they bagged the day before, and i bagged two weeks earlier).

there are two benchmarks at the summit. the 1952 one is missing, but both of it's reference marks are present. hidden behind some bushes to the east is the 1936 benchmark.

the register is in need of a new booklet and pen.
