Ascent Trip Report

We drove only 1/2 mile in on the HC access road, then hiked the remaining 2.5 miles to the formal trailhead.
The Missouri Springs route follows an old road to a water tank, then follows a wash which was fairly brushy, but most of it was avoidable. The final push out of the wash was beautiful with some fun scrambling until near the top when it was looser and not as good footing. We followed one suggestion to go around a relatively large sub-peak on the left, but I would rather have just gained the extra couple hundred feet. Eric thought we should have gone around to the right, but I thought it looked incredibly steep and loose on that side to attempt a traverse. The ridgeline itself provided the best footing and route the rest (after the largest subpeak) of the way till finally obtaining the true summit. The summit register is in a geo-cache tupperware-type container.
The summit is phenomenal with views across the Las Vegas Valley to the Spring Mountains, Fortification Hill, Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Lake Mojave... well.. it's a huge view.
The route down was sublime. We headed down one drainage before Missouri Springs and skied the soft skree keeping to the right forks. Some fun easy downclimbs were involved and we ultimately rejoined the original wash and designated route right at the water tank. It was shorter and much cleaner hiking. Another great day peakbagging. Goodbye 2009!
