Ascent Trip Report

We left from Cusco at 3:30am, stopped for breakfast, and began hiking from the parking lot at 7:25am. We reached the pass below the peak at 8:38am. As it turns out, this is as close as you are allowed to get to the mountain, and there are attendants to make sure you don't attempt to summit. Instead, we hiked to the top of the hill north of the pass, which has a great view of Rainbow Mountain and into the Red Valley. Most photos of this area are enhanced, but the colors were vibrant in the morning sun. We continued to the next rock formation to the north which had a bit of interesting scrambling. Afterwards, we continued on the trail past the pass and entered the Red Valley. There were more attendants keeping hikers off of the peaks, but once they were out of sight we hiked up to a subpeak of Mirador Pururaucas (I think) at 10:10am. We had lunch and hiked out. There were a couple hundred people at the pass when we reached it at around 11:10am, compared to about five a few hours earlier. We were back at the car at 12:22pm, and I was in bed in Cusco at 4:30pm.
