Ascent Trip ReportStill reveling in yesterday's sunset finish, I aimed for another on this 10 mile, 4 peak loop. Soon after setting foot on a dirt road near the crowded and noisy Monte Cristo Campground around noon, I was obliged to step to the side for a truck driven by a man who informed me that it was the last day of hunting season. Yay! He said it was good my hat was white, but it became apparent as I passed a couple of hunters that orange would have been a better choice. I proceeded with an abundance of caution, and a slight touch of fear.
Soon, I departed the trail for an almost-ordeal-level slog up the steep southwest slope of Rabbit Peak #1, replete with slips, slides, and cuss words. I started to beat myself up for not having taken time to find the best route, but it was a short climb and I was enjoying some fine San Gabriel-style scenery by about 1:30p. I flipped through the register, noting an entry from a group led by the Doggetts, had a snack, snapped some photos, then began the climb toward Granite Mountain.
