Ascent Trip ReportSet up a car shuttle with one car parked at Bearpaw Preserve (prior permission required) and drove the other to Vivian Creek Trail Head. Hiked along Mill Creek on south bank past Vivian Creek Trail Junction until reaching a ducked drainage (about 3/4 mile past parking lot). Followed steep trail along drainage, which eventually shifted to slope on left side ending on a narrow ridge. This section was very steep. Followed the ridge to the east and along the hillside to a saddle at about 8440' and then into a gully to the saddle on Yucaipa Ridge. Next, followed the ridge to the southwest to the summit of Little San Gorgonio. Could not find register.
Followed ridgeline downward to the west past a radio tower to a road leading further west until the road took a sharp left turn. Then headed up the short ridge to the summit of Wilshire Mountain. Signed the register and continued further west along the ridgeline to Wilshire Peak. Signed register there and then continued further west to summit of Oak Glen Peak. After descending to another saddle to the west, ascended the ridge to Cedar Mountain. Signed the register.
After passing another couple of saddles to the west, we climbed a short slope to the summit of Birch Mountain. We descended to the northwest following a ducked trail until reaching the Oak Glen Divide Trail and followed it down to the junction of 1S09 (leading to Allen Mountain) and 1S08 (leading to Bearpaw Preserve). Since it was dusk we leaved Allen for another time.
On the descent, we had our headlamps on for lighting. We eventually reached a curve in the road and noticed our lights were reflecting on a pair of menacing eyes (probably a mountain lion). We stared back for several minutes and decided to close ranks and continue the descent to the parking lot of Bearpaw.
