Ascent Trip Report

Four Peak Loop that included San Bernardino East, San Bernardino, Anderson, and Shields Peaks. Started at sunrise on a very cold November morning and made the mistake of hiking in shorts and without gloves.

San Bernardino East Peak 4 hours, 7 miles, 4000 feet
San Bernardino Peak 5 hour, 8 miles
Anderson Peak 6.5 hours, 10 miles
Shields Peak 7.2 hours, 11 miles
Parking Lot 10 hours, 18 miles

Parked at Forsee Creek Trail Head Parking Lot. Road for last 1/2 mile may not be suitable for 2WD passenger cars. Hiked up Forsee Creek Trail to Fork Springs (about 6 miles of constant uphill and 4000 feet of elevation gain). Passed by some of the fire damaged areas along the way. Once at Fork Springs, took right turn and followed use trail leading to San Bernardino Peak Divide Trail. Once on the Divide Trail, followed it to the west, past the junction to Momyer Creek Trail to a large rock outcropping on the south, which is the San Bernardino East Peak. Followed the short use trail to the summit and signed hte register. Clouds were rising over the ridgeline bringing cold winds so decided to cut short the summit time and continued west along the Divide Trail to San Bernardino Peak (about 3/4 miles). There was a small saddle along the way but not much elevation change. Signed register and enjoyed lunch.

Next continued east past San Bernardino East Peak, junction to Momyer Creek Trail to the west ridge of Anderson Peak. Followed use trail to summit and signed register. Great views of Yucaipa Ridge (next weeks hike). Descended down northeast ridgeline to Divide Trail and on to Shields Peak. Ascended up west slope of Shields, which is covered in large rocks (least favorite peak of the day). After a few false summits, reached peak and signed register. Due to windy conditions and some altitude sickness, made a quick descent to the Divide Trail and on to Anderson Flat. Took right turn there leading to Fork Springs nad then down Forsee Creek Trail to parking lot.
