Ascent Trip Report

I climbed to Eagle Crag over Mt. Meader, starting from Wild River Road. I followed the Basin Trail to the Basin Rim. This was a very gradual walk and I was alone the entire way. The scenery along Blue Brook adds great interest to the hike. There are numerous interesting water features along the ledgy section of the brook. The towering cliffs on the opposite side are quite amazing as well. I found the Basin Rim to be a very nice area as well, with scenic ledges and views over the Basin. The climb up Mt. Meader was arduous, especially the first section up by Ragged Jacket. The first summit knob of Mt. Meader had good views into Evans Notch. The true summit was off the trail somewhere beyond and I didn't bother touching the exact point. There was a precarious section with views to the east into Maine, then a spur up to a large ledge with views across to the Baldfaces. From here up to Eagle Crag, it was a long, wild ridge walk with a few undulations. There were some scenic sections in a mini gorge and through a bog. Eagle Crag had the best view of the day, with open views in all directions. The Baldfaces tower above. There were good distant views beyond the Meader Ridge to distant peaks in Maine. There was a good view to the Carter Range over the trees. Eagle Crag is a nice peak, but I don't think it should be included on 52WAV since it is too close to the Baldfaces.
