Ascent Trip Report

Black Mesa was a really nice high point due to its long-ish hike, surprising beauty, and gorgeous weather. While eastern New Mexico was largely featureless plains, the Black Mesa and immediate surroundings were in quite a lovely desert environment. The topography was also quite hilly as there are a good number of other mesas and buttes in the area. We decided to wear closed-toed shoes in case we should encounter any rattlesnakes (we didn't, but it's prime habitat). 8.4 miles round-trip, and we were car to car in 2:50. Gorgeous area and a worthy high point!
