Ascent Trip ReportWhat a long hike in December after fresh snowfall. I broke trail from the Phelps Mtn trail junction to the summit. I was the only person to summit this day. No tracks ahead of me and didn't meet anybody on the descent. I spent 30 minutes on the summit all by myself - something that is near impossible in summer I would assume. Beautiful views from up top. Other high peaks were poking through the clouds. I had to scrape the rime ice off of the summit plaque in order to read it. Great weather. Cold but almost no wind on the summit. Almost no sun all day. Overall, a great winter ascent of a tough peak. 14+ miles round trip. It took me 6 hours to get up, about 1 hour total for lunch just below the tree-line and wandering around the summit, and 4 hours to get down. I strained my knee a bit on the descent, ruining my plans for Algonquin Peak the next day... Pics |
