Ascent Trip Report

From US 191 we turned onto a dirt road to the Rose Peak lookout and found the gate locked. We retreated a short way down the hill and parked at a sign that read "Rose Peak 1" (mile), pointing right, up the lookout road. About 50 feet up the lookout road we veered left into some tire tracks leading uphill. This turned out to be an unmaintained but very usable trail that switchbacked up the hill directly to the lookout in under a mile. It's possible to climb some of the stairs of the lookout to excellent views in all directions. The USGS benchmark is a short distance away to the south at the end of a brushy ridge.

If you continue south on US 191, you will pass through the Morenci copper mine, perhaps the largest man-made object I've ever seen.
