Ascent Trip Report

Scoped out the potential to climb up to split rock as a bushwhack. Hiked down to the old road shown on the USGS map but the road is barely visible. I ran into a another person near my location in full hunting blaze orange so I did not continue in case he was hunting. I scoped out enough of the route that I will come back and do Split Rock from this route. The additional hiking mileage and add gain were due to this additional scoping down the backside and back up to the peak and down again.

I also note that the gates to the back parking seem to be open every weekend but even if not, there is a public parking lot against the Highway 285 where one can park for the hike.

One other final note. Although there is a nicely develop and maintained trail to the summit, there is several nice bouldering areas just off trail. One slab in particular was a very fun class 3 made of steep metamorphic rock. The steep slab was at a very steep angle but had excellent grab knobs, jugs, and footholds. I will have to remember to use this alternative route in future runs.
