Ascent Trip Report

First time hiking with Maryellen Wander Eyer and her son David. Stephanie was supposed to come but was unable to at the last minute. Tina came along though! The plan was to all hike Tabletop and then just Tina and I would do Phelps since I needed that one. Maryellen and David planned on just waiting in the car while we did that one.

Left home at 4:00am and started at the trail head at 7:00am in the rain. We knew it would rain most of the morning as we started off from the loj. Steady rain on and off, but not cold until we were almost at the summit of Tabletop. The summit was completely socked in, cold, wet, and windy. Needless to say, we didn't stay long. Heading back down, no one other than me needed Phelps and I was just going to postpone that for another day. Tina was cold and hungry and wanted to bail on Phelps. I didn't want to leave three people waiting 2+ hours for me.

On our way down, however, the sun came out, we dried off, and had some snacks. Tina was now game to do Phelps so we were back to our original plan. Maryellen and David went to the car and Tina and I went up Phelps. This was a fairly steep 1.2 miles up. There are a few look outs that are nice, but once you work your way around to the other side of the mountain, it really opens up to a beautiful summit with great views. This perspective was different from the other hikes I have done. Very different view of Colden and Haystack, Basin, and Saddleback, etc. Very crowded at the summit since it was Columbus Day weekend and Canadian Thanksgiving. Lots of French.

We spent about 20 minutes enjoying the weather and the views. Took an hour to get back to the main trail and then we headed to the car. We reached the car by 6:00 so it was an 11 hour hiking day and about 15.5 miles. So glad we did end up doing Phelps as it was the highlight of the day. Would love to do that one again. Tabletop, not so much.
