Ascent Trip Report

After two canceled trips up Laraway I was to lead for the Green Mountain Club (one due to knee surgery, the other due to weather), I finally went back up it, 13 years after having first climbed it as part of my Long Trail hike. I parked at the east end of the impassable (to vehicles) section of Codding Hollow Road, and got a late start (12:15). I followed the old road to where the Long Trail crosses, and headed up. There was barely a dusting of snow at the bottom, but by the top there was about a foot. it had also blown and stuck to trees, making it very hard to follow the white blazed Long Trail. I managed to stay on the trail up past the cliffs on the south side of Laraway and over the top, but shortly after that got off trail four times. The first three I managed to find the trail again, but the last time it was getting dark, and I was already close to where the Davis Neighborhood trail branched off (which I was planning to take out), so I bushwhacked past some beaver ponds and cuts until I got to a woods road. I think that was the trail I was looking for, but it was too dark to see blazes. I had a headlamp, but the moon was up, so I didn't bother to use it. I got back to the road well below where I was parked (actually on a different branch of the road than the one on which I parked), and followed the road back to the car, getting there around 6:05.
