Ascent of Wheeler Peak on 2017-10-07Date: | Saturday, October 7, 2017 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Wheeler Peak | Location: | USA-Nevada | Elevation: | 13063 ft / 3981 m |
Ascent Trip Report Traveled from Northern Utah, past Delta, then onto Baker, NV.. where it was forecast to get above 70 degrees during the day. In early October, Great Basin National Park Scenic drive was still open all the way up to the Summit Trailhead at 10,200 ft. Very well maintained trail all the way to the summit. The lengthy 12,000 foot ridgeline was blustery and frigid. Thankful for the numerous shelter-cairns along the ridge. Upper trail was slick, snow-packed, icy.. so went straight up on the talus steps. Summit spike missing.. although 2 Reference spikes point toward the vacant hole in the rock. Gorgeous blue-sky views all around. Bring a puffy! It can get very cold above 13,000 ft.! |
Summary Total Data | Quality: | 7 (on a subjective 1-10 scale) | Route Conditions: | Maintained Trail, Snow on Ground, Scramble | Weather: | Cold, Extremely Windy, Clear Warm below ridge. Cold, windy ridge to summit. |
