Ascent Trip Report

After picking up my Whitney permit for the next day, I drove up to Onion Valley to tackle Kearsarge Peak. I started from the old mining road about a mile short of the campground. A steep sand/scree slog up the initial face gave way to a bushwhack as I tried to follow the trail, which was sparsely cairned. Once the summit area was in sight, I ascended up the ridge, after which I realized the high point was still a few thousand feet to the west. I sidehilled across talus and boulders and summited after 3h15m. Not wanting to bushwhack again, I descended and headed for Lilley Pass. The chute was a fun sand slide down to the boulders above the Golden Trout Lakes. I got onto the trail, but I found it to be nearly impossible to follow; several times it led me to the wrong side of the creek, and it cliffed me out a few others. I reached the Kearsarge Pass trailhead and walked down to the road to my car. Door to door was 5h35m.
