Ascent Trip ReportSecond peak in sequence. The two sub peaks that guard the false peak saddle are inviting. Especially when viewed from the top of the Frenchman Mtn peak. Of the two subpeaks this point is most inviting since it has no man-made crap on the top. It is unstable material to climb if leaving from the saddle and only about a 250 foot scramble. I chose to climb it from its southern ridge since I was solo and did not want to risk an ankle injury on the constantly falling/sliding material on the west face. The approach was easy from the south - a typical class 2 with some class 3 moves if you wanted to throw some in for fun.
Coming down (since Dunaway was waiting for me) I took the fastest way down along the lose steep terrain on the west side. Talus, crumbling rock....class 2/3. The southern ridge although backtracking would be most prudent.
I found no wrappers, no glass, no beacons or other trace of man unitl the summit where there was a grouping of rocks that someone left in the shape of the number 84. 1984 perhaps?
These are the two false peaks that guard the approach to Frenchman Mountain. Looking back from Frenchman you see Sunrise Northeast as the sharper peak to the right that does not contain a radio antenae. (2009-11-19). Photo by William Musser.
