Ascent Trip Report

Attempt of Cloudripper. Very cold day, it was below 30F all day. It had snowed the previous couple of days and the previous night. We went to the backpackers trailhead at South Lake hoping to walk the pipeline, but the pipeline had an inch of snow on it and didn't feel safe. So we drove down to Parchers Resort and started hiking from there at 9 am. The turnaround time would be 3 pm. The snowy talus scramble above 12,000' was fairly slow and slippery at times, and by the time we got to Peak 12406 and looked at what was coming up on the snowy talus on Vagabond and Cloudripper, it was clear that we wouldn't be able to make it up to Cloudripper safely and before our turnaround time. There wasn't enough snow to just climb the snow, but there was enough to make the rocks slick and not fun. We were not in the best shape, it was about 20F here, there was a light wind, and none of us wanted to be on the mountain after sunset. So we spent an hour or so lazing around at 12406', took in the gorgeous views of Thunder and Lightning Lake and the Palisades, and headed back down. Will be back to do Cloudripper. The views, with a dusting of snow everywhere (more on the high peaks), the alpine lakes, changing colors, Sill and the Palisades... one of the best I've seen, in spite of not making the main goal.
