Ascent Trip Report

Because of its location and name I have been looking forward to climbing this mountain for a long time. Doing it with Jeremy on a beautiful early fall day was fabulous, though our hike back to the car was slow and our legs were sore by the end. (We do not live at high altitude and had driven to Asheville the night before, so we could feel the altitude by the end of the hike.) We followed the Black Mountain Crest Trail northward from Potato Hill, down through Deep Gap, and up to the top of Winter Star with one reasonable water break just north of the gap (time indicated here is for this section of the trail only). The trail was not hard to follow. The summit area of Winter Star has a benchmark and some views along with a couple of rocks where we rested and had snacks before starting the walk back to Mount Mitchell.
