Ascent Trip ReportThe least obvious summit of the day. The Black Mountain Crest Trail northward from Big Tom becomes steeper and rougher, and the ropes which previous trip reports mention are still in place in two locations (though I wonder how old and weathered they are). The trail itself is well marked and easy to follow. We did not find a benchmark on top of Balsam Cone, but we did make a point of tagging the likely candidates for the true summit (assisted by GPS). Time listed (49 minutes) is from the top of Big Tom to the summit of Balsam Cone.
