Ascent Trip ReportDepart Albuquerque 8am turned off 550 onto Highway 279 (17 miles passed San Ysidro). Good views of Cabezon from 279. Arrived at TH at 9:20 (1:20 min drive). TH elevation 6500’.
Hiked 0.5 mi uphill, then flat (7077’), and at 0.75 mi began scree ascent, well marked with cairns and trail.
First climb marked with arrows before gully. Gully climb 3+ but not fourth class. Lots of hand and footholds. Once out of gully, easy trail to follow to gnarled tree with small climb to get to it. Two more climbs to get to top with ascending dirt trail.
Wind break on top with fabulous 360 degree views. Reached top in 1:15 min, 7800’, 1 mi, with numerous breaks for photos. Got out of wind, perused ammo can of goodies, wrote in log. People hike it all year round. Last person up was May 3.
Down climbed facing inward for top two climbs and in gully. Took concentration but wasn't difficult or scary. Back at car by 12:30, 2.18 mi RT. Another car in lot for the view, otherwise didn't see a soul.
Took BLM 1179 (Cabezon Rd.) south back to junction with 550, south of San Ysidro. Nice views of Cabezon from south. Easy road to drive, passing through Ojito Wilderness and White Ridge bike area.
