Ascent Trip ReportPaved road all the way to the parking lot at Panchuela CG. Parking fee $2. Took Cave Creek Tr (#288) to Skyline Tr (#251) to Lake Johnson Tr (#267) then bushwhacked up the ridge line to the south of the lake. The bushwhack along the ridge is not too bad but its steep, goes up and down, requires navigating around rocky outcrops (best to stick to the climbers right) and a few downed trees. Beautiful views from the top. No log. Instead of retracing my steps down the ridge I did what Will Wente did, headed down the mountain from the peak. See his GPS track and trip report for details. Quite steep but much better than doing the ridge line. I followed a route that paralleled the feeder stream for Lake Johnson and picked up bits and pieces of a trail. Once near the lake a trail becomes obvious. Took a user trail that circles the lake along the north side to trail #267.
All trails between Lake Johnson and Panchuela Campground are marked and distinct. There is ample water resources along much of the route. I concur with Will Wente on the more direct route to the summit from Lake Johnson. While steep its direct with few obstacles and without elevation loss like the ridge line route.
Did not see a sole the whole day. Only one couple was camped at the Panchuela, no one at Lake Johnson. Beautiful weather. |
