Ascent Trip ReportAfter many years of delays, Mt. Umunhum is finally open to the public. One can park 100 vertical feet from the summit and walk up some stairs to the summit as I did, or park at the lower Bald Mountain lot and walk 3.5 miles up a trail. The views of Silicon Valley and out to the ocean are excellent. The summit had just opened 4 days ago, and there were perhaps 20 cars at the top.
"The cube", a gigantic concrete remnant of the former Almaden Air Force Station, has been preserved, though it reminds me of the "Who's Next" album cover.
Approaching nearby Mt. Thayer from this side looks unlikely. There is a large gate across the road, and I heard some kind of construction noise coming from that general direction.
