Ascent to Eureka Hill-Front Gate on 2017-09-18
|Date:||Monday, September 18, 2017|
|Ascent Type:||Unsuccessful - Turned Back|
|Point Reached:||Eureka Hill - Front Gate |
| Elevation:||2304 ft / 702 m|
| Remaining Elevation:||56 ft / 17 m (100% left to go)|
Ascent Trip ReportAlthough almost the same elevation as popular Mount Tamalpais a couple of counties south in Marin County, Eureka is seldom if ever visited, even though a well-paved road leads all the way to the top. Point Arena Air Force Station, once a NORAD radar surveillance station, but abandoned in the 1990's, occupies the entire summit. Bob Burd reported that he found the gate open and was able to get to the high-point without being noticed, but I had no such luck. The gate was securely locked and covered with ominous warning signs.
Will have to revert to Plan B.
There is no Plan B.
