Ascent Trip ReportWARNING: This is not the highpoint of Penang. There are lots of ways to climb to the top. I personally did a night hike up from the Botanical garden (see GPS tracks from previous TR). If you want to get to the state's real highpoint, continue past the Monkey Cup tea house, dropping down to a saddle and then meandering around a few hills. It is almost an hour to the real HP, West/Tiger Hills. There is a military installation on top of both of these 800+m peaks so you can't exactly tag the true points, but it was good enough for me. I don't want to be arrested in Malaysia! Bad idea! Very bad idea! Don't do it... they don't have a sense of humor in this country.
It adds almost two additional hours to get to West/Tiger peak. I am not sure if you would get turned around during the daytime as the road was designed for the military; I suspect not, but we don't have much beta. I took the trail down that was shown on Peakbagger app, meandering through a bunch of hillside huts that were guarded by aggressive dogs. Afterwards I had a spicy 2 AM walk through Penang to get back to my hotel. Groups of street dogs prowl the neighborhoods, trying to decide if I was someone to chase, beg for food, or ignore. Usually they went through all three phases. My Malyasian coworkers said that I was not the safest to roam the city at that hour, but I couldn't find any taxis in operation and my phone had no access to the 'net.
