Ascent Trip ReportA sandy road walk (or drive up with a 4WD) .... 1.3 miles, gain, 32 minutes RT
This county needs an updated/detailed TR which I attempt to do here. I had problems following the reported routes thereby going the wrong way and losing over an hour in the process.
We zeroed our odo at I-131, exit 153, and drove west on #10.
0.0M ... I-131, exit 153 went west on #10
4.8M ... turned right (north) on Saddler Road (paved)
6.8M ... cross 40th road, Saddler becomes dirt.
7.5M ... turn right (east) on sandy road (43.92746,-85.62276).
7.8M ... fork on road, parked here this was my TH (43.92906,-85.61619). The HIKING ROUTE to the summit is to the right. It was here that I made my mistake. I went left and after a while found myself somewhat lost as the road went east/northerly, I backtracked to this fork, loosing over an hour in the process.
I should note that in wet weather low clearance may not make it to here, and the TH will be at Saddler.
I went right. The road bends right followed by an immediate left on its way easterly (ignore the lesser road on the right at 50 yds) to a large N-S clearing at 400 yds. I stayed left along the left (east) side of the clearing for 200 yds where I found the continuation of the sandy road (43.92966,-85.61118) eastbound for 500 yds to the wooded summit - the road comes to a 3-wat JCT, nothing obvious, couldn't find the reported BM "ORONO"
This hiking route is an easy drive-up for a high clearance in dry weather.
I backtracked in 12 minutes.
Michigan appears to be a huge sandbar, no matter where we've been we've found sand, even the new road construction presently in progress on I-131 has a sand base.
