Ascent Trip Report

Sawtooth Route. From Guanella Pass (11,650’): Two hours up Bierstadt (14,060’), then about 1.5 hours across the sawtooth (13,680’ low point) and one more hour to Evans summit (14,264’). Had to walk/run the Evans summit road down to Summit Lake (12,840’) to avoid a nasty thunderstorm on the west slope, then hiked back up near Mount Spaulding summit and traversed along the western slope (13,540’), and finally down to the Bierstadt parking lot via the willows. Although I actually popped out downhill from the parking lot (11,450’) and had to hike another 200’ uphill to the car. Due to the reascension/up/down/up/down, the total gain wound up being 3894’. Total time down from Evans summit was 4 hours. ***MOUNTAIN GOAT SIGHTING*** “Most Memorable 14er of the Year” Award for 2017 goes to The Sawtooth. Would have been Longs, but that storm will forever be nightmare material. Lightning striking all around...
