Ascent Trip ReportDid this one as the "Half Challenge" version of the "911 Memorial Mt. Grant Challenge" day. Very well run event and very enjoyable. I was afraid I wasn't in good enough shape to pull this one off, but it went surprisingly well. I was very tired afterwards, but didn't feel like I'd spent the day in a torture chamber like has been the case after some peaks. Being able to ride down from the top as a passenger in a van was very nice compared to hiking all the way back down as is typical.
Also, I went to Mammoth two days before, spent the night at the ski lodge (9000'), and then rode the tram to the top of the mountain (11,058') and stayed up there 4 full hours for a total of 17 hours at 9000' or above. Did it help me on the higher parts of Mt. Grant? Will probably never know for sure, but I'm guessing a little, at least. I didn't seem to be suffering near the top as badly as a lot of other people I saw.
Also, the website said to "come prepared" and have enough water and food, but there wasn't really any need. Aid stations with everything including fresh fruit were every 3 miles and an extra bottle of water picked up at one of them and carried in a back pocket would have completely eliminated the need to bring ANY water or food. Nevertheless, I had my pack with enough water and food for the whole thing, so kept gnawing away at my own stores to lighten the load as I climbed.
As mentioned in previous reports, it's all road until the very end where there's enough of a scramble up a high enough talus covered "rock" to make it feel like you've climbed a mountain! And of course, the views were stunning, as always. My 10th Nevada County highpoint. Yayyy!
(I'm not completely sure where I started. The app on my phone said it was like 8250', but that puts it too close to the top when viewed on Google Maps. So I just said 8000') |
