Ascent Trip ReportTook 8:15 Catalina Express out of Long Beach ($66 round trip), caught the Conservancy van for a ride up to Blackjack Campground trail head ($32 round trip). Radio towers were on top- so we just circled the fence, then hiked road over to Mount Orizaba. We saw no no trespassing signs and gates were open. Evidently, we triggered some warning system (camera's perhaps) and a ranger was dispatched. We met the ranger on top of Orizaba. He told us that the mountain was off limits to everyone except authorized personnel because of FAA equipment, security concerns and radiation. We were escorted down the mountain, but no fine was issued. Next we hiked the trans-island trail to the Airport in the Sky, then caught 3:00 van back to Avalon. The van driver and everyone else with a conservancy radio had heard all about the Orizaba breach and security concern on the radio. Except for triggering security concerns, it was a beautiful day even though the island vegetation was dried out. We saw one fox, buffalo, ground squirrels, harbor seals and a sea lion. Happy to say we had very smooth seas, both ways.
