Ascent Trip ReportUnder threatening skies I took Burnside Lake Road about 4 miles from state route 88. This dirt road has some rocks and ruts in the first two miles that are annoying, but no problem with high clearance. I then turned left on an unsigned road and took it uphill to a locked gate. Thinking I might be able to get higher, I turned onto another dirt road at this point and went a little farther uphill, but without a good map of the roads here, I thought it would be better to park and start hiking.
Most of the hike was on the continuation of the road behind the gate. At about 9400 feet I turned right onto a final dirt road, then continued steeply cross-country. The last 100 feet up to the antenna is a scramble. I found a register and two reference marks, but no benchmark. With clouds coming in, I left quickly and make a beeline for the road. As thunder rumbled behind me at the summit, a sheriff's truck drove past me going uphill. The gate near my car was thus open, so perhaps it's sometimes possible to drive higher.
