Ascent to Kootenay Mountain-Newington Rd on 2017-08-23
|Date:||Wednesday, August 23, 2017|
|Ascent Type:||No Summit Goal|
|Point Reached:||Kootenay Mountain - Newington Rd|
| Location:||Canada-British Columbia|
| Elevation:||5085 ft / 1549 m|
Ascent Trip ReportThe morning after our ascent, I investigate the start of Petter's route as am passing. At Topaz Creek Rd km 3 marker, Newington Rd turns acutely L. Passing through an open gate (apparently not lockable due to damaged post), I drive 15km, to 1550m elevation, where I turn back at a fork as I don't have time to go further. This may be the best approach, although there is likely to be a locked gate further up and a bike may be useful to shorten the amount of road walking beyond that point (Shannon Dillmore reckoned 37+ km using this route in 2013). The route is likely to involve more hiking than ours but substantially less cycling. Alder growth may be a serious issue, in the future if not already.
