Ascent Trip ReportImportant Navigation Note: Google maps has incorrectly marked NF-1640 and does not even show the actual route the correct road takes. The road is well graded and bladed the entire way up to the Roads End Trailhead. At no point should you have to drive over anything remotely rough.
I tagged Strawberry Mountain on my way back from viewing the eclipse and came from the east using Summit Prairie Rd and NF-16. Not having a Forest Service map, I turned on to what Google had marked as NF-1640. The road quickly became rough and required clearance. It was nowhere near the worst roads that I have driven on, but I wasn’t looking forward to 10.5 mi of this. Looking at the map, however, there was no obvious alternative. After about 5 mi, I arrived a junction with the true NF-1640, which was wide, graveled, and bladed. I took this up the remaining 5 miles to the trailhead and fortunately found a spot to park. Even though the eclipse was many hours ago, there were still droves of cars parked on the side of the road for miles.
The trail to the summit is short and easy. I opted for the direct ascent up the south ridge. While I did encounter a brief section of talus hoping that could have been avoided, there was never anything more than class 2. The ridge itself is pretty gentle the whole way up. There were decent views from the summit, but smoke in the distance obscured most everything to the west.
