Ascent Trip ReportI approached Aneroid via the McCully Creek Trailhead. It was between that and taking the aerial trap, which as of my visit was $33. The ridge doesn’t save much elevation gain (though you do get extra peaks), and hiking through the upper meadows in the McCully basin was quite beautiful. If I had more time, I might have descended via the ridge and the access road that goes up it from near the McCully Creek Trailhead.
The trail is reasonably pretty and sees little traffic. I only encountered two other parties the entire day and one of them was on horseback. The trees are dense down low and gradually open up as you reach the meadows higher up, where you start to get views of the peaks. I opted to take the trail up the drainage as far as I could rather than break off early and climb over Hidden Peak/N Aneroid. My route is probably the easiest path up. There are a variety of use trails winding through the meadows to the occasional campsite. There must be large numbers of deer and elk in the upper basin, because there are lots of well established game trails. These trails make for easier going ascending the ridge after passing the last large meadow. My path put me into a small hanging meadow a few hundred feet below the ridge line, where you are able to see obvious breaks in the cliffs. At that point I just picked a path that seemed reasonable and then made the final short climb to the summit from the top of the ridge.
