Ascent Trip ReportMy second ascent of this great peak, this time with my family (Becca, Sage, and Sawyer) and my friend Larry. I highly recommend it! The driving directions from my 2014 ascent are spot-on, so use those. We took Becca's Subaru Outback and had no issues. A Toyota Yaris could easily make it as well. The berries were in season (part of the reason for picking this one). Also, the weather was much nicer than my ascent 3 years ago. I was in the clouds the whole time then, so no views. This time we had excellent views of Glacier, Baker, and most of the surrounding Cascade peaks. The trail is excellent to the abrupt ascent to the ridge. This section is loose and best avoided by large groups. Our small group of 5 was about the largest I would want to take with all the loose crap. There was a nice use trail again, with a few more small sections of loose crud before we topped out. Sage led the group most of the way up the mountain, setting a great pace and finding the route quite well. He has come a long way in his hiking abilities while I was deployed. The summit register only went back to 2016. We relaxed on the summit for close to an hour, taking in the views, eating lunch, and waving to a glider that flew over us a few times. On the descent, Larry and Sawyer struck out in front while Becca and I helped Sage navigate some of the steeper terrain. While this peak was a second ascent for me, I am happy to re-ascend any of the Smoot's 100 peaks with Becca along!
