Ascent Trip Report

I've been wanting to visit Steens for a long, long time. Made a day of the ascent by going through the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge auto tour. The interpretive trail is pretty good, and some of the sites are interesting. Benson's pond and P Ranch were great. There weren't a ton of birds in the Buena Vista ponds. There were some ibis, ducks, loons. I was kind of disappointed though, because the other refuges I visited around this trip were much better. There was also a farmers field near Princeton which had sandhill cranes, hundreds of Canada geese, Avocets, stilts, ducks, and more.

Anyway, the peak was cool. Great views. I think the views were better from the East Rim. Kiger Gorge was also awesome.

On the way out we passed through French Glen, which looked pretty sweet. We also went to the Kiger Mustang overlook to camp and in the morning we saw a family of Kiger Mustangs.
