Ascent Trip Report

Drove to NE after hitting SD high point in the afternoon. Couldn't decide if I wanted to hit NE high point as it was already dark and I was concerned about getting stuck on the dirt road near the high point. Especially after getting stuck at the KS highpoint a few days earlier. Not to mention there was a storm in front of me that just rolled through the area. It was 9pm and I didn't want to stop at a rest stop for the night yet so I decided to go for it. As soon as I got off the highway the road turned to dirt which I didn't read about. I thought only the mile by the high point was dirt. Almost 20 miles of dirt roads to get there. Roads were in decent shape but muddy enough to get me scared that I was going to get stuck again and this time at night. Hear was beating hard for the 30 min drive down the backroads especially since reading that the area near the high point was the worst. Actually it turns out that the 1.2 miles to the high point was the least likely area to get stuck. Got there at 9:45pm and made sure to look out for Buffalo. Parked next to high point and took a pic in the dark. Windmills in the area. Was actually a real cool experience accomplishing this high point even though it was a drive up. Wind was blowing pretty good. I bet the view was quite good during the day as you were definitely on a rise and would be able to have a 360 view. Was ecstatic to get on the highway again knowing I made it without getting stuck. Now I would drive about 100 miles on I-80 until I got tired so I could get as close to IA as possible knowing I was running out of time with my trip.
